Recently, I have been reminded of the lingering questions that are floating around in modern Christianity concerning spiritual warfare. As I have thought back on my own journey in what God has taught our family about how to resist the enemy, I wanted to share with you what I have learned in how to use the Word of God to combat spiritual attack and bring clarity on the topic of spiritual warfare as a whole.
First, it’s important to realize why you are being attacked. Oftentimes there will be an onslaught of enemy interference, or hinderance, in your life when you are on the cusp of spiritual breakthrough or seeing God do something amazing in your life. Be ready for opposition the moment you step out to do the will of God and be obedience to what Christ is directing you to do. Having this fact firmly planted in your mind will keep you from being surprised or taken off-guard, and instead you can be ready to resist the enemy.
Spiritual attack can keep us from being effective, strategic, and purposeful here on earth. In short, it can keep us from impacting eternity and building the Kingdom of God. That is why it is vital to remember we have a very real enemy that is seeking to hinder us, but that God has given us weapons to resist him, so that you never have to take the his attacks on your life lying down.
The key is to switch from being spiritually defensive to spiritually offensive. If we are children of God, we can draw upon our legal right to use the authority we have in Jesus Christ to put the enemy in His place through the power of Jesus’ name.
Just because we are experiencing discomfort in our walk with Christ does not automatically mean that we are under spiritual attack. There is a common misconception that if we take a stand against enemy attack, our lives will be void of trial or difficulty and we will be free to lead lives of ease, pleasure, and comfort here on earth. However, we must remember that when we choose to follow in Christ’s footsteps, we are choosing the Narrow Way of the Cross and that means a life that can regularly experience being misunderstood, rejection, trial, and opportunities to die to self.
As followers of Jesus Christ we can know when it’s time to resist the enemy and when we are to receive a test from God. Learn to distinguish the difference between enemy interference and a trial or discipline from God’s hand by the fruit it produces in your life. Godly discipline in a believer’s life is a healthy, productive pain that leads to life and hope. The harassment from the enemy only brings doubt, disillusionment, defeat, and despair. Also examine whether or not you are being hindered from specific purposes God is laying on your life. You can know that if something is keeping you from doing the will of God, it is not coming from our Heavenly Father.
Lastly, remember that you are not helpless against the enemy’s schemes. If you are a child of God, you have the legal right to stand in the power of Jesus’ name and command the enemy to back off. God’s Word remains true — if we resist Satan, he has to flee!
FINAL THOUGHTS
God wants to make us spiritually strong so we can live loving, outward, sacrificial lives for His glory. Our Heavenly Father’s desire is to free you from being preoccupied with your own struggles to turn outward to assist others, and He has given us everything we need through the power of His Name to walk in victory and freedom.
