Book by Amy Carmichael
By MANDY SAELER
When a parcel of photographs arrived from a far-off friend, Amy Carmichael’s eyes searched the scenes that the frames captured: winter snow dusting barren branches, a misty valley lying between shadowed mountains, sun-illuminated clouds hanging above calm waters. These natural scenes inspired Amy as she pondered the possible deeper meanings of each photograph and penned the insightful spiritual truths that they conveyed visually.
This short book is the most creative work of Amy Carmichael’s that I’ve yet encountered, full of beautiful and poetical expressions of truth that enrich the soul with heavenly perspective and spiritual fortitude. Interestingly, this small book carries a likeness to Lilias Trotter’s nature-inspired writings on the spiritual life. With the knowledge that these two women were contemporaries on the mission field and shared a passion for Christ-centered living, I can’t help but wonder if Amy’s way of seeing biblical truth woven through the photographed scenes might have been inspired by her long-distance friend!
